Microsoft XP: Why does modem number keep increasing?

  • Because I have installed/uninstalled my modem several times for various
reasons the modem number in the device manager keeps increasing. Its now up
to 7 and I am wondering why since it is the only modem in the computer. Its
an ADSL PCI modem and it shows up in the computer as a network device yet the
description there is PCI ADSL LAN modem #7.

Did you remove the modem from the device manager before you reinstalled it?
Is the modem working OK? If so, I wouldn't worry about it.
