I've been running a WSS 3.0 server with 2G RAM in a Vmware Server Virtual Machine in a DMZ connected to a SQL 2000 database server.
How much RAM should I allocate to the VM and to the server as a whole, realistically, for "snappy" performance for 100+ users? Performance is very key for our users and perception matters compared to other web sites we run/use. Should I just allocate 1 to 2G for the VM per the guidelines, or if I just make it a WFE does it need as much?
Not sure yet how well this product performs. I hope SharePoint is not considered too "bloated" and most would say it's mostly lean and effecient as far as web applications go. Thanks for any advice.

Hi,
The performance planning for WSS is really depending on different aspects like number of user, the load per user, number of documents, etc. It is hard to say and the performance of your site will also depend on the SQL server. For a web server for just 100+ users and WSS, I would recommend 2 GB, but that really depends on your situation. The CPU speed will also have a huge influence on a front end server.
For a start, take a look in the performance planning for WSS 3.0: http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/WSS/en/library/700c3d60-f394-4ca9-a6d8-ab597fc3c31b1033.mspx?mfr=true
