3rd party software will let you- Partition Magic 7.0, but it will cost you around $70- have seen it recently with rebate for $30 off.that was at a store, possibly Staples....you can resize partitions, merge them, at will with that. You can also create an image of a partition and reinstall that to a bigger partition or new drive... many options with it. Another program available called Parition Commander. Probably more around...use Search engine...there are some freebie ones, but they are a bit complex...one is called Ranish something...works tho. Hope this helps.

Couldn't you copy the contents of your present C: to D: or E: and then format C: so it would have enough room for the upgrade?

You could also try a program like Norton Ghost or so and copy the contents of the 1.5GB to the 8 GB HDD and then do the upgrade on the 8 GB HDD. There are other free programs too which can be used for creating an image of a partition and then writing it onto another partition. One such is XXCopy.

XXCopy
Hope this helps...
